Review by Andre Philpot, author of A Species of Adventure
Your book shows his determination to do what's right, and to see his duty through, at whatever risk. It shows the incredible courage and leadership that allowed his crew to feel safe in his hands and to literally follow him into a living hell.
Your book also opened a door for me to understanding my own father's efforts and feelings about which he would never speak- He too was a Canadian who left for Britain by choice and also became a Squadron Leader. And brought back a 'warbride' he stayed with for life.
I loved every page of your book. It is fine writing.
Congratulations!

Wonderful account. I found the descriptive detail made me feel as if I was there. It’s a very magnetic book that was hard to put down. I highly recommend Pathfinder to anyone interested in WWII and the Canadian Air Force, and British Air Force.

Uplifting story
I so appreciated Bennet’s skill in his use of dialogue in this story. I really felt that was in the 1940’s . Uplifting to read about real life heroes who put the completion of their mission over the value of their own lives.

It is Good to be Reminded of Everyday Heroes
This is a great book and a well told story, anchored in fact. The generation of young women and men represented in this story are quickly, and sadly, fading from our view. This story (and others like it) helps us remember this generation of everyday heroes. It is also the story of a bomber crew or “combat” family. Every member shares a common purpose, protecting their mates, leading to a shared benefit, seeing the job done. There is nothing glorious about war, but there is great glory in the strength of character it engendered. This is one commendable example of how character is forged out of adversity. I recommend this book.

A delightful immersion into a Canadian WWII bomber pilot's experiences.
As a Canadian whose own father served (as a paratrooper) in WWII, as well as being interested in Canadian historical events, I found Pathfinder to have a nice mix of interesting story lines, characters and thought provoking moments interspersed with actual WWII historical facts specific to the pilots who risked their lives. Clearly written, entertaining and a terrific story about a brave and dedicated Canadian.

A fast paced peek into the world of a bombing crew in WWII
The story of Pathfinder is a fantastic way to summarize the logs and information collected by Gordon Bennett, who this story follows. The number of missions flown by the crew together is incredible, considering the circumstances. The author does a great job of trying to illustrate what would be going through the minds of these men during this historical time. I enjoyed the book immensely and will likely reread it!

Wonderful story of courage and determination

There are many books about World War II, most of them are from the perspective of the general or political figures, Pathfinder is different. It’s a personal story about a man and his family and eventually his crew. There is no glorification of combat in this story, it’s more about the human cost of war. There is courage, honour, morality and sacrifice, for all involved. A beautiful story based on fact, it is written with immense respect for all in the story, I’m going to read it again.

I enjoyed reading the account of my Son in Law, Seth's grandfather Gordon's leadership during the second world war. Lionel did a great job of creating a story out of the notes and material provided by his father Gordon.
